We are delighted to introduce you to the Mass General Brigham Pathology Residency Program, formed from the merger of two long-standing, separate pathology residency programs based at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Keep reading for details!

Mass general Brigham Pathology Initiatives

Residency training is just one example of coordination and integration of the Departments of Pathology at BWH and MGH. Below are brief descriptions of some of our additional recent collaborative efforts.

Enterprise Leadership

In March 2022 the Departments welcomed David N. Louis, MD, as our new Mass General Brigham Chief of Enterprise Pathology. As Enterprise Chief, Dr. Louis assumed the role of Chair of the Department of Pathology at BWH while continuing his role as Chief of the Pathology Service at MGH. In April 2022, Julia Sinclair, MBA, became our new Mass General Brigham Enterprise Vice President of Pathology.

MGBELS

The Mass General Brigham Enterprise Laboratory Services (MGBELS), led by Clinical Director Anand Dighe, MD, PhD, represents systemwide clinical laboratory integration. The MGBELS Central Laboratory will provide anatomic, clinical, digital, and molecular pathology services to support patient care operations, trainee education, and scientific innovation at BWH, MGH, and the other hospitals of the Mass General Brigham system.

Quality & Safety

Quality and Safety programs in Mass General Brigham Pathology will promote a safety culture, ensure patient and employee safety, and advance a standardized clinician and patient-centered approach to the delivery of quality laboratory services across our hospitals and ambulatory care sites. This new initiative is being overseen by Clinical Director Yael K. Heher, MD, PhD, who will collaborate with Mass General Brigham leadership.

Pathology Systems

Under the leadership of Athena Petrides, PhD, MSc, Clinical Director for Pathology Systems and Chief Medical Information Officer for Pathology at Mass General Brigham, our Pathology Systems will undergo a major transformation. Upcoming changes include implementation of digital anatomic pathology technology for routine sign-out, and a transition to a single Enterprise Epic Beaker Laboratory Information System.
